High-resolution satellites: are our privacy expectations too high? by Kate Baucherel (April 29, 2015)

Title of the Reflection

Say cheese to the sky

First Impression

An Essay about how the satellites can evade our privacy

Quote

Perhaps this is the time to realize that the world does not revolve around us, and bigger issues are at stake— and it is time to admit that the end justifies the means

Reflection Paper

A satellite that can identify manholes and mailboxes, even if we are at home this satellite can know or capture what we are doing even private stuffs. Invasion of our privacy is a very high price to pay for the benefits of these advance technologies. The biggest beneficiary of this satellite cameras is the environment we can observe and inspect from space the crucial and fragile ecosystems and protect them, and we can have a better understanding of natural disasters and climate change. We can even expect an “Earth Cloud” an instagram feed of the planet, capturing the daily life of the planet.

Many people are still arguing that this satellite invades the privacy of people, but this satellite has help a lot of people in dealing with their land problems specially the farms. Google street View is one good example that a satellite can invade someone’s privacy, streetview has somehow captured most of the bizarre and absurd things people do, but Google then pixelated their faces but they are still recognizable. There were people who filled complaints against Google that the company is invading their privacy, however this was ruled because they said that the focus must be on the person for the breach of privacy to occur. Satellite sweeps does not focuses on one person only.

We live in a world where we know that cameras our around us or above us, this satellite cameras does not take pictures inside of our house they just take what is on top. We must consider that this world can be a better place if we let those satellite cameras do their jobs and live on with our lives. The world doesn’t revolve around us anyway.

5 things I've learned

  1. The Environment benefits a lot from the Satellite Camera
  2. An Instagram like feed called the Earth Cloud will be created Soon
  3. Digital Basecamp, an online map and database of the current high-resolution Satellite
  4. Satellites conducted 70% of the total required controls on farm payments
  5. The focus of an image must be on the individual for a breach of privacy to occur.

5 integrative questions

  1. Who benefits the most from Satellite Camera
  2. What is Earth Cloud?
  3. What is Digital Basecamp
  4. How many percent does the satellite conducted?
  5. How can breach of privacy occur?
