Google Dominance or Information Age Misunderstanding by Nikki Williams(November 11, 2015)

Title of the Reflection

Search Engines Competition

First Impression

An Essay about how google dominates or we just misunderstood Google.

Quote:

Regardless of how you view Google’s alleged dominance of the market and whether or not you agree with their supposed manipulation of search results, it is clear that there is a long way to go in defining the boundaries of online super companies.

Reflection Proper:

Goole had rapidly grown on the market since 1998 ‘till present, especially when it was given the consent to enter portals of every smartphones and gadgets that are now living in the world that is still in the continuity of soaring the eminence and progression of the high-technology matters.

It has always been in the leading edge of new, exciting and helpful technological advances. And also the most in demand search engine in the market that there is. As it is on the savouring its roaring success, the other competitors considered it as a deafening noise, they started to create gossip and speculation regarding the algorithm product of goggle. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) launched an investigation into business practices centered on Google’s alleged research bias.

As the issue upon the investigation held by FTC reach the domain of Google, the company (Google) revealed and expressed their strong disagreement with the accusation in a certain press-con and they defend the malicious issues about their algorithm.

Despite all of these allegations, they were still able to maintain their rank as one of the top and influential search server. However, the issue had begun to spread into the different Software Programs and had made everyone plastered in their mind that the Google Company is creating conspiracies against their competitors. Furthermore, the European Unions (EU’s) made a formal complaint against the company (Google) for using dominance to bias Web search. The Google has faced formal charges for anti-trust violation. As an initial response, defended its business practices on a blog post, and after almost 5 years the investigation has finally ended on February 2015. The EU’s and Google had an agreement to “make concessions on how they display Competitors link”.

Therefore, if Google manipulate its algorithm to support its products to the consumer it is not different from watching NEWS Channel that gives full coverage to the stories. After what happen, regardless of how you view Google’s claimed superiority of the market and whether agree or not with their way of manipulating the search results, it is indeed clear that there is a very long way to go in defining the limitations of the online companies. On the other hand, internet superpowers like Google, Amazon, PayPal and Facebook have an opportunity to rewrite the definition of fair competition for a global community.

The argument between the roots this issue either if it is cause by Google dominance or Information Age Misunderstanding is really confusing but the main cause is the Misunderstanding about the Information Age. It was never Google dominance since without the other competitors being advertised by it or those competitors merging with Google, this company (Google) wouldn’t be able to reach the success and its popularity. It was all about how computer or Digital Age is now progressing through the years of its evolution. The Google was also with the continuous furtherance of Information Age.

5 Things That I've learned from the article

  1. Google is always at the leading edge of new, exciting and helpful technological advances.
  2. The Google family are not as mainstream, but they help provide Google with a full complement of technology from digital coupons and facial recognition to e-commerce, cloud computing, and more, although its core product remains search engine technology.
  3. That consumers can switch to substitute search engines instantaneously and at zero cost constrains Google’s ability and incentive to act anti-competitively
  4. Search bias is the term for what complainants say occurs when Google exploits its search algorithms to promote its products over those of competitors.
  5. Google continues to try to influence decision-makers through monetary donations to companies and individuals that will support them. In the first quarter of 2015, Google spent approximately $5.47 million lobbying a select group of legislators on subjects such as privacy and competition issues in online advertising, openness and innovation in online services and devices, and international internet governance.

5 Integrative Questions

  1. Why company has eagerly bought up competitors and other successful companies to help spread its influence across the Web and the world?
  2. Why what was the reason Google has been accused numerous times of using its vast influence and market share to hinder competition?
  3. What the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) launched an investigation into the business practices centered Google’s alleged “search bias.”?
  4.  What activities created by google to defend itself in the public eye as to help sway public and regulatory opinion in their favor?
  5. Where people can now find and access information in numerous different ways—and allegations of harm, for consumers and competitors?
